C » Credit Cards

The balances on a credit card constitutes a debt on the Estate which must be paid (unless the deceased overpaid the outstanding balance).

Most credit card companies will stay, for a certain time, any further addition of interest. They freeze the balance to allow the administration of the Estate to take place.

The Deceased may have arranged insurance to pay off the balance upon death and usually the statement will show if this has been done. If not shown ask the company.

The last statement held by you may not show the last balance as at the date of death so ask the company for the accurate figure, in writing.

Credit cards should normally be cut in half after someone has died, to prevent misuse, and kept safe until further directions are given by the credit card company.
