Usually placed in local newspapers and the London Gazette (see Useful Sites) to advertise for claims either of debt owed or of inheritance, in an Estate of a deceased by a certain time (usually 2 months from publication date) to provide ‘protection’ to Executors/Administrators against late claims arriving after distribution of the Estate to Beneficiaries.
Such late claims would then be pursued against Beneficiaries directly rather than the Executors/Administrators. They would not be forgotten about or lapse.
